Coronavirus has affected Lyon County’s emergency dispatch operations in several ways over the past month.
Lyon County Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy says the department uses the Emergency Dispatch Medical Protocol under normal circumstances for emergency calls. Now it has to ask more questions for more kinds of calls.
In addition, dispatchers are doing their best to practice social distancing. Van Gundy says dispatchers wear masks when outside the Communication Center. The cleaning schedule has stepped up to every few hours. Work is underway to have a backup dispatch site where quarantined staff could go during COVID-19.
Van Gundy’s comments came this week during a discussion on National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.
More information about dispatchers and the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center can be found on the department’s Facebook page.
