The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the slated list of public events scheduled to be held in the local community this year.
The latest casualty, the 2020 PDGA Junior World Disc Golf Championships. Dynamic Discs events coordinator Doug Bjerkaas made the announcement Friday afternoon that the event, scheduled for the first full week in July, has been officially canceled.
This year would have been the third consecutive that Emporia had hosted the event after the PDGA granted the event to Emporia in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Despite the cancellation, Bjerkaas says the PDGA has assured that Emporia will still get to host the competition at least once more.
The announcement follows the cancellation of the annual Glass Blown Open last month. Bjerkaas says they are hoping to still bring some form of disc golf event to the community once the COVID-19 pandemic begins to slow.
Bjerkaas says the loss of the event will have a financial impact on Dynamic Discs and the Emporia community, however, any losses would be minimal compared to the cancellation of the Glass Blown Open. According to Bjerkaas, the junior world’s brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars to the community, while the GBO brings in upwards of $2 million per year.
