Emporia’s second temporary housing location for coronavirus patients is now settled.
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management says a contract has been signed with La Quinta to serve as so-called non-congregate shelter, following a similar announcement about Emporia’s Super 8 hotel Thursday.
One hotel will serve as a location to quarantine exposed individuals. The other will isolate patients with lab-confirmed results that do not need hospitalization. Authorities have not said which hotel will serve which purpose.
Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern says residents will go to the shelters on a voluntary basis. As of Friday morning, nobody had checked into either facility.
The hotels are the latest local step to combat both an overall spike in cases and the development of several clusters at four Emporia production facilities and a church.
