Two Emporia Schools have been recognized for outstanding student achievement.
Riverside Elementary and Logan Avenue Elementary schools have both been named 2019 Challenge Award recipients. The awards, administered by the Confidence in Education Task Force, recognizes Kansas schools which make a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in student population.
In a news release from USD 253 Emporia Public Schools Riverside Principal Jared Giffin says, “we are very proud of the students and staff at Riverside! We are fortunate to have earned the challenge award the past three years in a row and six of the last out of the last nine years.” Logan Avenue Principal Jessica Griffin says, “We could not be proud of our school family! Being recognized with a challenge award despite the adversity our children face is a major accomplishment.”
Griffin would go on to credit the school’s focus on more social-emotional learning over the past several years as a major key for the school’s success. Riverside and Logan Avenue were two of 90 schools to receive the award this year.
Since 2002 more than 1,700 challenge awards have been presented to schools across Kansas.
