For the second time in as many months, the Emporia Senior Center has chosen to extend its closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a press release Wednesday morning, Executive Director Ian Boyd announced the senior center will remain closed and suspend the majority of its operations until June 1. According to the release, Boyd has made the decision based on the continuously increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the local community.
The Senior Center is continuing to offer “limited services” by appointment despite the majority of its services being recreational in nature. The ESC will continue to coordinate aftercare needs with social services at Newman Regional Health and other local agencies who seek Durable Medical Equipment.
Additionally, the center will assist residents who act as caregivers for loved ones, friends or neighbors in locating essential resources for those individuals. In the release, Boyd says, “The ESC has had challenging times historically. This pandemic has no doubt created a new chapter for all of us and introduced new obstacles. Over the past year and a half, we have not only survived some dark moments, but we gained momentum. This growth is something that we are all proud to be a part of and look forward to obtaining our vision.”
In mid-March, the center announced it would be closing until Mar. 30 before extending the closure to May 4th just a week later. For more information or updates on the ESC find them on Facebook or contact Boyd directly by emailing director@emporiaseniorcenter.org.
