The Kansas Department of Labor has updated its timeline for certain unemployment benefits through the federal CARES Act.
Labor Secretary Delia Garcia says residents should start filing for Pandemic Unemployment Insurance by May 12, with payments processing by May 25. Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation could be up and running by the end of May.
Pandemic Unemployment Insurance offers up to 39 weeks of unemployment compensation to the self-employed, independent contractors, nonprofit employees and gig workers, as well as part-time workers and employees who do not qualify for benefits under state or federal law.
Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation is for residents who have used all their regular unemployment benefits from July 2, 2018 forward or for claimants who have ended their benefit year.
Residents using these benefits are also eligible for the additional $600 weekly unemployment benefit as part of Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation. The payment will be added automatically to the regular weekly payment.
