If you haven’t made arrangements to send your second-half property taxes, now is the time to fire up the computer, lick those stamps or use the dropbox at the Lyon County Courthouse for payments.
Officially, the deadline is Sunday, but payments will be accepted Monday because of the weekend. On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, Lyon County Treasurer Sharon Gaede encouraged residents to use the dropbox on the west side of the courthouse under the overhang. One would think there would be a lot of grumbling the property tax deadline is staying put with all the coronavirus adjustments the last two months, but Gaede says that hasn’t been the case locally.
Gaede also said she was disappointed the processing company handling online or card payments decided not to waive fees, which run $1.50 for payment by checking account and 2.5 percent for debit or credit cards as residents pay their second-half property taxes and most motor vehicle tag renewals. Residents using www.ikan.ks.gov to renew motor vehicle tags will pay a $2 processing fee per vehicle as well as a $1 flat fee for e-check or a 2.5-percent fee for debit or credit cards.
Vehicle transactions have a 60-day extension once the Kansas state of emergency is lifted — currently May 14.
