Income tax payments have already been delayed to July 15 due to coronavirus, and there is some talk of pushing that deadline even further. Regardless of when that deadline actually is, the area’s annual Tax-Aide program through the American Association of Retired Persons will not take place this year.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Coordinator Edie Loughmiller says Tax-Aide sites will not reopen this year. Loughmiller says the risk of reopening the Kansas locations “can’t be justified,” mentioning unknowns about the virus and the inability to use the “drop=off” method that paid tax preparers can use. The Tax-Aide program requires a face-to-face interview with each taxpayer.
Loughmiller says local Tax-Aide volunteers will reach out to everybody who had set appointments.
There has been some talk recently of extending the tax deadline to December as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, but there has been no action on that topic.
