An entire wall at the Emporia Police Department has been dedicated to those law enforcement officers who have given their lives to serving the public.
In honor of National Police Week, the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center events committee went above and beyond to honor those officers who have fallen in the line of duty. Over 100 pictures and names of officers from across the state of Kansas currently adorn the wall according to Lyon County Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy.
Along with the officer’s names and photos, the wall also contains the name of the agency they worked for and their end of watch or the day the officer was lost. Each year the city of Emporia hosts a memorial to fallen officers, which is normally held around this time, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the 10th annual event had to be canceled.
Van Gundy says despite the memorial being canceled the ECC still wanted to do something to show their officers and those across the state the respect and honor they deserved, hence the creation of the memorial wall. Flags will be flown at half-mast twice this week.
Flags will fly at half-mast Wednesday in honor of Overland Park Police Officer Mike Mosher (Moe-SHUR) who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday, May 3 in Overland Park. Flags will then fly at half-mast again Friday in honor of Peace Officer Memorial Day.
Photos of the special memorial wall are available on the Lyon County Emergency Communication Center’s Facebook page.
