The increasing risk for severe thunderstorm activity in the KVOE listening area has prompted the National Weather Service to place Lyon and most surrounding counties into a severe thunderstorm watch.
Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties have been placed into a watch through midnight. Storms could bring hail to the size of tennis balls and wind gusts up to 70 mph. Isolated tornadoes are a possibility but unlikely.

Strong thunderstorms are possible across the KVOE listening area Thursday.
Storms could fire along a Council Grove to Holton line by mid-afternoon, or they could develop close to the Kansas Turnpike from Emporia to the northeast. Regardless, storms could bring hail to the size of tennis balls and wind gusts up to 70 mph. Isolated tornadoes are possible but unlikely.
Heavy rainfall is also expected. Lyon and Osage counties are now in a flash flood watch from 7 pm Thursday until 7 am Friday, joining Coffey County in that watch. Greenwood County is in a separate flash flood watch from 6 pm Thursday to 7 pm Saturday. The National Weather Service expects 1-3 inches of rain through early Friday with higher amounts possible.
