The Jones Aquatic center will not be opening this summer in Emporia. The Emporia Recreation Commission board voted unanimously not to open the center during a special meeting held Wednesday evening.
Board member and chairman Michael Helbert said during the meeting that his big concern was staff safety.
Emporia Recreation Director Tom McEvoy said they gave the board a number of pros and cons about opening the aquatic center before the decision was made.
McEvoy said concern for both patron and staff safety was a big concern.
Board member and city commissioner Danny Giefer said there was to much at risk.
Emporia is not the only city to not open aquatic centers, Salina, Manhattan and Ottawa are several of the cities to keep their facilities closed.
The pool at the Lee Beran Rec Center will open for use on June 8th.
Wednesday morning the Emporia City Commission approved an agreement with the Emporia Recreation commission to operate the Jones Aquatic Center.
