After getting criticized for comments about protests and the American flag, Saints quarterback Drew Brees issued two apologies.
In apologies to the public and to teammates, Brees said he “completely missed the mark” on the race relations discussion underway since George Floyd’s death at the hand of a police officer in Minnesota nearly two weeks ago.
Brees set off a growing firestorm after saying he would “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America,” an apparent swipe at protests like the ones Colin Kaepernick used in the 2016 season. Brees received more criticism after his apologies, but Saints linebacker Demario Davis said that step demonstrated true leadership. Other players said the overall situation opened up lines of communication that would make the Saints locker room stronger.
