Major League Baseball isn’t any closer to getting the 2020 regular season underway.
Players “resoundingly rejected” the owner’s proposal for a short schedule and a significant pay reduction. The owners’ plan includes a sliding pay scale, with players at the league minimum getting less than half of their original salaries and superstars getting less than 22 percent of their typical paychecks. Players have demanded a prorated salary — tentatively agreed to in March — which would give them 70 percent of their normal paychecks if 114 games are played as the union has proposed.
Pitchers and catchers would need up to four weeks to get ready for the upcoming season, so Thursday’s announcement puts a July 4 start in jeopardy.
