While Emporia State University is looking at a steep budget cut and has announced staff cuts — mostly through attrition — Flint Hills Technical College is not expecting any overall budget cut at this time.
The Flint Hills Technical College Board of Trustees approved a small budget increase as proposed at its monthly meeting this week. College President Dean Hollenbeck says enrollment will play a key role in how the budget looks.
Several general line items are seeing increases, including salaries, equipment repair, supplies, software, reimbursables and service contracts. Others, including travel, grants, building and grounds improvements and utilities, are decreased.
Hollenbeck says a return of coronavirus this fall or winter, which health officials have mentioned is possible, could hurt the budget. He also expects the budget situation will clear up somewhat by the August board meeting. He also says the college has received some federal money to help offset expenses. The college has received over $300,000, with half going to student needs and half for college operations.
