The 2020 MLB Draft is complete, and the Kansas City Royals say the draft has given them solid talent for the future.
After claiming Asa Lacy from Texas A&M and Nick Loftin from Baylor in the first round Wednesday, the Royals picked Ben Hernandez of De La Salle Institute in Illinois with their second-round pick. Hernandez struck out 67 in 45 innings — with an ERA under 2 — as a high school junior.
The Royals then picked Alabama outfielder Tyler Gentry in the third round. Gentry hit .429 in the shortened 2020 season with power to all fields.
The Royals closed out the draft by choosing pitchers Christian Chamberlain from Oregon State and Will Klein from Eastern Illinois.
As to when baseball returns to action, well, that’s anybody’s guess. Owners have not yet responded to the players’ latest offer of an 89-game season with full prorated salaries. Owners started this week with a 76-game offer covering up to 75 percent of the prorated amount. Still, Commissioner Rob Manfred says he’s “100 percent sure” there will be a baseball season this year.
