Lyon County deputies say an Emporia man died and a child was airlifted for medical treatment after a crash near the Emporia Municipal Airport on Sunday evening.
Lyon County Deputy Zach Shafer says 26-year-old Diblain Jacobo was driving a crossover utility vehicle northbound in the 1100 block of Road L when he lost control and went off the gravel road. The vehicle went into a ditch, hit a power pole and caught fire.
Jacobo was pronounced dead at the scene. A child, listed earlier as a female by deputies, was airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Besides deputies, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Emporia State Police and Safety, Emporia Fire and Olpe first responders were dispatched to the scene.

One person is dead and another was airlifted after a single-vehicle crash east of the Emporia Municipal Airport on Sunday evening.
Lyon County Deputy Doug Stump says the vehicle was northbound on Road L and went off the gravel road for currently undetermined reasons about a quarter-mile north of Road 110 around 8 pm. The vehicle crashed into a power pole and caught fire, sparking a grass fire and two different power outages.
Stump says a male inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A female was airlifted, but deputies have not mentioned the destination at this time.
Close to 450 Evergy customers from near the airport south-southeast into north Greenwood County lost power after the crash. Less than 40 customers remained offline by 10 pm.
Names have not been released as deputies work to find and notify next of kin.

9 pm Sunday: Fiery crash near Emporia Municipal Airport leads to significant power outages nearby
Lyon County deputies are investigating a fiery crash that developed near the Emporia Municipal Airport on Sunday evening.
Deputies, Emporia Fire and Olpe Fire responded to the 1100 block of Road L shortly after 8 pm for a reported injury crash and grass fire. A vehicle had crashed and burst into flames about a quarter-mile north of Roads 110 and L.
Further details about the crash are pending.
The crash developed at the same time as two power outages for Evergy customers essentially from the airport south-south into northern Greenwood County. Over 440 customers lost power, including a number of customers in Olpe. Evergy has confirmed the crash is the cause of the outages.
