The local listening area is invited to spend a “Summer Under the Stars” beginning next Friday to benefit Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980.
The three-part fundraising series is a partnership between the Bourbon Cowboy and VFW Post 1980 and features two movie screenings and a live musical performance in the Emporia Masonic Lodge parking lot located at 420 Merchant Street. The first event will take place next Friday with a screening of the classic western “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” starring “the Duke” John Wayne.
Bourbon Cowboy owner Susan Brinkman says all of the upcoming events are free to the public, however, suggested donations will be accepted.
VFW Post 1980 Commander Michael White says the post has made a lot of headway in clearing past back taxes in the past several months since the VFW announced it owed a significant amount of money to the Internal Revenue Service last year. White says the VFW is no longer in a “dire situation.”
Not only will proceeds help to clear the VFW’s debt, but White says there are also a number of upgrades that need to take place at the post building.
Gates will open at 8 pm for next Friday’s screening with the film getting underway at dusk. Brinkman adds the event will also feature a live DJ and a John Wayne impersonation contest.
Brinkman says while the events are all free of charge, residents still need to reserve their spots at Bourboncowboy.Simpletix.com.
