Census matters got an update on KVOE’s Morning Show on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Emily Kelley says the Call for the Count is officially underway in Kansas. The goal is to drive the self-response rate up past 70 percent.
Emporia is at 61.7 percent, down from 69.4 percent a decade ago. Lyon County is at 63.1 percent, or down from 68 percent 10 years ago. Kansas as a whole was just over 70 percent in 2010.
Kelley says the door-to-door process will end on Halloween. She is encouraging residents to call in their Census information, go online to www.census.gov or return a paper form mailed out earlier this year.
Local and state organizers have stressed the need for participation because of how it directs federal funding in areas like health, education, transportation, infrastructure and other topics as well as representation in Congress.
