Many area school districts have secured grant funding to help feed schoolchildren this summer.
The Kansas Health Foundation and Sunflower Foundation recently awarded around $1.2 million total in grants to nearly 120 school districts as a way to offset costs for their summer meal programs. The districts receiving this round of grant funding are also participating in the US Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.
Final amounts were not released. Awarded districts include:
*USD 253 Emporia
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County
*USD 243 Lebo-Waverly
*USD 244 Burlington
*USD 245 Southern Coffey County
*USD 284 Chase County
*USD 329 Wabaunsee
*USD 389 Eureka
*USD 417 Morris County
*USD 420 Osage City
The grants follow several major developments during the coronavirus pandemic, including record unemployment and a resulting demand for food assistance including school meal programs. Many districts have offered meals to students despite limited resources.
