Engines were revving and spirits were highway in Americus Saturday for a very special cause for the first annual Americus ATV/UTV Benefit Poker Run.
The run was organized by Americus natives, and lifelong friends, Kirk Hammond, Dave Elbert and James Redelfs. Hammond says while they can take credit for the event’s conception, an abundance of support from the local community made it a reality.
Over 40 machines were registered for the ride which took participants on a roughly 44 mile trip around Americus with five separate stops along the way. At each stop, players would participate in a game to win a card to compile a winning poker hand.
The top two hands received cash prizes at the end of the ride with the first place individual receiving $100 and the second-place player receiving $50. All proceeds from the ride, games and an assortment of raffles will go to benefit the construction of new baseball and softball fields in Americus.
Hammond says the event is essentially “for the kids” as baseball and softball provide them with memories and lessons that last a lifetime.
Totals from the fundraiser are currently pending.
