USD 251 North Lyon County is hoping to finalize plans for teaching students soon.
The go-ahead may be coming at any time from the Kansas State Department of Education, which is preparing a huge document — perhaps as much as 700 to 900 pages — to guide districts on how to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. During Wednesday night’s board meeting, Superintendent Bob Blair said there may well be options for parents or students who are comfortable with the traditional in-class setting and options for those who would rather learn at home. Blair’s wish is to have as much face time as possible.
Besides guidance on education options, the KSDE document will also have information on items like transportation and cleaning procedures.
Blair comes to North Lyon County after nine years as superintendent of USD 114 Riverside — but over 20 years as a teacher and administrator with the district. He says he’s impressed with some of the things North Lyon County has done — even before coronavirus — to improve education for students. Foremost on that list is the ongoing push to redesign.
Besides the update on plans to start the school year, board members also went through a two-hour training session through KSDE and discussed suicide policy as part of the district’s overall crisis policy.
