(ap/nbc/yahoo)The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday it will not play non-conference games in football and several other sports this fall, the most dramatic move yet by a power conference because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The league cited medical advice in making its decision and added that the plan would be applied only “if the conference is able to participate in fall sports.”
At the Division II level The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has canceled all fall sports and championships.
There is also a chance there will be no high school football in Texas. At least in the Dallas area.
The superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District — with 23 high schools that field football squads — said he has serious reservations about putting student-athletes on the gridiron with cases of coronavirus on the rise in the Lone Star State.
When asked point blank if he thinks there will be a 2020 football season, he said “I seriously doubt it.”
The University Interscholastic League, which governs high school sports in Texas, pushed back and said, “at this time” football is still set for the fall.
The New Mexico Activities Association has postponed the 2020 football and soccer seasons to the spring.
