Emporia Fire was called out to two small grass fires that were started by other fires Monday, including a highly unusual cause.
The first call was to Roads 280 and L, about 10 miles north of Emporia, after a pickup truck caught fire — likely due to mechanical issues — shortly before 6 pm. Emporia and Allen-Admire crews were toned out, but District 2 got there first and put the fire out. The truck was destroyed. The grass fire was listed as a few hundred yards but turned out to be smaller than that.
A much more unusual call came in almost two hours later when a flaming couch on the side of the road triggered a small grass fire in the 2000 block of Road J. The sofa was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived, but firefighters got it put out quickly along with a very small grass fire. The cause of the couch fire is currently undetermined.
No injuries were reported with either fire.
