Additional funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation will be benefiting street improvements in the City of Emporia soon.
Wednesday night, the Emporia City Commission formally accepted an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation through the city connecting link improvement program (CCLIP). The program is providing the city with $600,000 for geometric street improvements at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Prairie Street in Emporia.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says the improvements are desperately needed in the area.
The project is set to go out for bid on Jul. 1 of 2021 and is a 90/10 partnership between KDOT and the City of Emporia.
On top of that project, Ubert announced Wednesday that KDOT has approved two additional improvement projects for fiscal years 2022 and 2023.
Funding of $300,000 each for the two additional projects through KDOT was announced Wednesday.
Following the acceptance of the 6th Ave. and Prairie project, commissioners also approved an engineering agreement with BG Consultants to serve as the project engineer.
In other business, commissioners approved a 10-year agreement with Rural Water District #2 in Coffey County. The contract is for the purchase of water by District 2 at a minimum of 2 million gallons and a maximum of 4 million gallons a month.
Water use in excess of the 4 million gallon cap will lead to a 10 percent penalty.
Finally Wednesday, commissioners awarded a bid to APAC Kansas Inc. Shears Division in the amount of $585,516 for a resurfacing and drainage improvement project in Industrial Park III.
Commissioners adjourned Wednesday’s meeting until 10:30 am next Wednesday at which time commissioners may take action on “time-sensitive items” related to CARES Act COVID-19 funding. Those potential actions will follow a study session set for 9 am inside the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
