(cbs/ap) The Kansas City Chiefs have told rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans that training camp is “a go” and they should report to the practice facility Monday for COVID-19 testing.
The rest of the Chiefs roster will report to camp on July 25.
The NFL and NFLPA have still not come to terms with what the 2020 season will entail, but that can’t stop the Chiefs from telling their players to report to camp — per the collective bargaining agreement in place.
The NFL Players Association announced on Thursday that 72 NFL players have tested positive for COVID-19.
The number represents 2.5% of players considering 90-man rosters for training camps. The NFLPA did not report how many players had undergone testing.
The report arrives the same day that Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt criticized the NFL for its lack of COVID-19 planning, claiming that players are largely in the dark about protocols to protect players in addition to financial implications of the pandemic.
The Chiefs and Texans are the first teams scheduled to report to camp since they play in the Thursday night season opener on September 10.
Owners are scheduled to meet via conference call Friday.
