It was a different format, but the result was the same for the Kiwanis Club of Emporia as it held its 72nd annual Pancake Day fundraiser Saturday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
Coronavirus forced the postponement of the event and then changed the format from the traditional sit-down meal to a drive-thru event. However, President Mike Perigo was quite pleased with how things went and he’s interested to see the end result. He tells KVOE News service clubs across the country, including the Kiwanis club here and his prior club in Indiana, have had to make major changes in their fundraisers due to COVID-19.
To facilitate the new format, the club decided against the longstanding all-you-can-eat aspect, instead going with three pancakes, two Fanestil bacon sausages and a choice of milk or water to drink. Perigo says a line developed by 6:30 am, about 30 minutes before the official start time.
Perigo says all the funds generated from the event go directly back to the community. Proceeds from last year’s event were recently distributed to food pantries in Lyon and Chase counties to help residents get through the pandemic.
Totals from Saturday’s event are pending.
