How does Lyon County reduce its tax burden? Is the draft set of zoning regulations better for residents than the longstanding rules?
These questions and more highlighted KVOE’s final Candidate Forum on Thursday, this one featuring the Lyon County Commission Second District. Political newcomer Robert McClelland says inflation, property taxes and mill levy have increased over the past 20 years while the population has dwindled. He says certain spending has to be reduced or restructured so residents can have some tax relief — using appropriations to Emporia State and Flint Hills Technical College as examples.
Current Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board member Phil Mott is focusing on widening the tax base.
Newcomer Doug Peck credited the County Commission for its plan to trim the levy by four mills. However, he says it’s not enough for most residents.
On zoning, Mott says the draft regulations under discussion for months are better than the original draft as compiled by Urban Collaborative because they address issues with ag land zoning and they cut out areas where county zoning runs counter to state law. Peck says there needs to be more emphasis on an appeals board. McClelland says the new regulations, if passed, will hurt businesses and limit homeownership, and he says having different city and county plans would be better than having one plan.
With KVOE’s Candidate Forums now completed for the primary election, attention turns to the election itself Aug. 4. In-office advance voting continues at the County Courthouse until noon Aug. 3. Mail ballots can also be mailed if requested by July 28.
