Emporia Fire Crews were dispatched to 1411 Center Street for a possible tree fire Saturday evening.
Crews arrived at the scene shortly before 5:30 pm for a report of smoke in the area. According to Batallion Chief Eron Steinlage, the smoke was coming from a hollowed-out tree located behind a residence, however, there were no reports of flames.
Steinlage tells KVOE News the tree was struck by lightning during thunderstorm activity Tuesday evening and had been smoldering ever since. The smoke became visible Saturday which led to the call.
Fire crews doused the tree with water and foam to prevent a possible fire from developing. No damages or injuries were reported.
