Cycling enthusiasts will be kicking up some dirt Sunday for the annual La Grind Gravel Bike Race.
Organizer Matt Brown joined KVOE’s Morning Show Wednesday to offer some details on the rescheduled event. Brown says due to the COVID-19 pandemic there will be several changes from year’s past including the length of the event.
Instead of being a multi-day event, this year’s race will begin and end on Sunday. Additionally, Brown says certain traditional activities have had to be altered to limit the possibility for mass gatherings.
This year’s field also had to be capped due to coronavirus concerns limiting the field to 150 participants. The event will encompass three different distances, 100, 50 and 22 miles with all distances launching from 520 Commercial Street in Emporia.
The 100-mile race will be a timed event with the time starting once a rider crosses a time pad. All proceeds from La Grind will go to benefit Handlebars of Hope, a charity that provides bikes to individuals both in the local community and Mexico.
