2019 saw total crime stats below the state’s 10-year average, although the Kansas Bureau of Investigation says certain categories saw year-to-year increases.
The KBI says the total reported index crimes were 5.5 percent below the 10-year average, and the crime index rate went from 31.4 crimes per 1,000 people in 2018 to 29.3 per 1,000 last year. However, the violent crime index was up 2.6 percent from 2018 to 2019 and is over 17 percent above the 10-year average.
Emporia reported 554 crimes for a crime index rate of 22.4, below the state average. The violent crime rate of 1.5 was also below the state average. The KBI lists 23 aggravated assaults or batteries, 12 rapes, one robbery and almost 520 property crimes.
For Lyon County as a whole, there were 628 crimes listed for a crime index rate of 18.9. The violent crime index was 1.6. Thirty-three aggravated assaults and batteries were reported along with 18 rapes and one robbery. There were almost 580 property crimes.
