A vesicular stomatitis outbreak has expanded to 24 Kansas counties, but it appears the area situation is stabilizing or waning.
Two weeks ago, Lyon County had three confirmed cases and two suspect or pending cases. All five have been released. In our neighboring counties, there are no confirmed cases and two suspect cases — down from six suspected cases two weeks ago.
Across the state, four animals are confirmed with VSV. Another 18 animals are either suspected or test results are pending. Nearly 200 have been released from quarantine.
VSV is transmitted by biting insects such as black flies, sand flies and midges. Symptoms can include lesions on the muzzle, lips, ears, coronary bands or ventral abdomen. Infected animals can also have fevers and other blister-like lesions on the mouth, dental pad, tongue, lips, nostrils, ears and hooves.
