LaGrind took place Sunday, to the relief of all involved.
Organizer Matt Brown says he was glad the event could take place, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Abby Shalek Briski came to Emporia from Stillwater, Oklahoma, where she’s a graduate student at Oklahoma State. This was her first time in Emporia for La Grind, and she says rides like this “help me keep my sanity” — so she was glad to take part.
Unlike years past, where La Grind was a two- or three-day stage race, the event was limited to Sunday with a 22-, 50- and 100-mile option for the riders due to the pandemic. There were other adjustments as well, including a heavy presence of hand sanitizer and an emphasis on cleaning touch points.
Proceeds benefit Handlebars of Hope, which provides bikes to people needing transportation both locally and in Mexico. Totals have not been announced. Over 140 people participated.
