Storms Sunday night had a potent, albeit limited, impact.
Storms knocked down 11 Evergy power poles in southeast Lyon County, knocking out power to an electric cooperative partner. Neither 4 Rivers nor Flint Hills electric cooperatives have confirmed outages in Lyon County.
Evergy had several outages in the KVOE listening area, with around 60 customers in northwest Emporia offline for about two hours and over 130 customers in Gridley offline since around 7 pm.
9:15 pm Sunday: Power outages continue in Coffey County; power poles downed outside Olpe
Storms have departed for the evening, but not before causing several power outages and triggering two flood-related warnings for parts of the KVOE listening area.
Thunderstorms generated strong enough winds to down at least four power poles outside Olpe shortly after 6 pm. Several outages affecting Evergy customers developed between 5-8 pm:
*Far northwest Emporia near Flinthills Mall lost power shortly before 7 pm. About 60 Evergy customers were affected. The outage was restored around 8 pm.
*Nearly 20 Evergy customers just north of Madison lost power shortly before 6 pm. That power was restored by 8 pm.
*Evergy reported five outages in and around Gridley affecting over 130 customers.
Rainfall estimates in the 2-3 inch range prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for northeast Greenwood County and an urban and small stream flood advisory for southwest Coffey County, but those were cleared with no reports of flooding. Two severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued for those parts of the area, but no severe weather was reported.
Currently, there is a marginal risk of severe weather — mainly 60 mph winds and hail up to an inch in diameter — along the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 35 for Monday afternoon and evening. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for updates.
6:45-8 pm: Severe thunderstorm warnings end, but flood alerts continue near Emporia
An isolated risk of severe weather has apparently ended for part of the KVOE listening area, but a flooding risk may continue until midnight for those same areas.
No severe thunderstorm watches have been issued.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms have covered the KVOE listening area at times all day. Rain totals:
*KVOE studios: 0.20 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.23 inches
*Olpe: 0.50 inches
