On a day when local businesses and nonprofits were urged to position themselves for federal grants as the COVID-19 response continues, area residents were reminded of a local effort to help businesses and nonprofits through the pandemic.
Once again, the KVOE On-Air Chat served as the source of information for the Greater Emporia Area Disaster Relief Fund. Emporia Community Foundation Director Becky Nurnberg encouraged residents to donate because that funding stream has shut off while requests keep coming in.
Because of those developments, the fund still has over $26,000 available for grants but could use more to meet the ongoing need.
Three grants were announced Wednesday, two for businesses and one for a nonprofit. Emporia Christian School received $2,000. United Way of the Flint Hills Community Impact Manager Hannah Crowl says the money for Chromebooks is well invested at the school.
Bourbon Cowboy received $2,300, while Stingers got $1,000. Emporia Main Street Events Coordinator Jessica Buchholz says local businesses are still needing help as the pandemic continues.
