There is a lot of orange signage and orange cones around town these days.
Both the Emporia Engineering and Public Works departments have projects going at this time. Engineering has started work on the annual Street Rehab project, which involves portions of five local streets:
*12th Avenue from Mary to Whittier
*Burlingame Road from 12th to Riley
*Logan Avenue from Weaver to Road M-5
*South Avenue from Commercial to East
*Peter Pan Park parking lot
Milling and overlay work will continue through late September and possibly into October, depending on the weather.
Meanwhile, Public Works has numerous projects across town, from water main and lift station repairs to subgrade pavement work. Department director Dean Grant says work is coming soon on parts of Weaver Street as an example. Repaving is coming south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks, while strengthening the street is taking place near US Highway 50.
Similar work is coming on portions of Sylvan Street affected by trash trucks.
In addition, Public Works recently finished an upgrade of its computer monitoring and control system at the Water Treatment Plant and is finishing the expansion process at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
On top of all that, Public Works has completed one project at the Municipal Airport as part of work to expand the runway protection zone north of the facility. The department had to acquire the property, demolish all the buildings and vacating a nearby airport road. It’s now turning its attention to a pavement “rejuvenation” project by the middle of September.
