A new option may be coming for High Schools in Kansas for the fall sports seasons. The Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Board has approved an alternative fall season opportunity for those schools unable to complete a traditional fall season and play in the spring.
Activities Association Executive Director Bill Faflick told the Executive Board this is a option just in case schools are unable to compete in the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision to play in the spring would be a sport by sport and school by school decision.
Teams could compete in a limited number of events in the fall and compete again in the spring. However the only state championships would be in the fall.
The state would be divided into 2 bands 4-5-6A and 1-2-3A. To implement the alternate season more than half of the combined schools of each band must participate in the alternative fall season in one or more activities.
The fall sports season in the spring would begin March 1st and end in April.
The start of the spring sports would begin practices March 28th and end in June.
The winter sports at this time would begin practices in November.
The proposal still needs approval from the KSHSAA Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will consider the proposal on Friday.
