Training camp resumes Wednesday for the Kansas City Chiefs after a day off Tuesday.
While a lot of the attention will be on the offense as long as Patrick Mahomes is calling snaps, the defense is doing well, according to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Off the field and related to the defense, ESPN is reporting reserve defensive lineman Mike Pennel will be suspended the first two games of the season due to a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Pennel, who played eight games in the regular season, started two playoff games and was a reserve in Super Bowl LIV, said he didn’t know he took a banned substance but he took responsibility for “what goes into my body” and promised to be more aware moving forward.
Pennel’s suspension follows a four-game suspension for cornerback Bashaud Breeland — also for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Spagnuolo anticipates a package of players filling Breeland’s role.
The Chiefs start the season against Houston on Sept. 10. All the games will be on Country 101.7 FM. Be sure to listen to the latest Chiefs Training Camp report with Mitch Holthus at 5:45 pm on KVOE.
