For the first time this season the KC Royals bullpen has blown a save opportunity. The St. Louis Cardinals scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th for a 6-5 win over the Royals Wednesday night.
Cam Gallagher gave the Royals a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning with a 2 run home run.
Ryan McBroom added a solo home run in the 8th to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Whit Merrifield drove in 2 runs with a double in the top of the 9th to give the Royals a 5-2 lead.
The Cardinals would score 4 runs in the 9th with 2 outs. There were 4 walks, a hit batter, a double and single in the inning. A bases loaded walk drove in the winning run.
Manager Mike Matheney says they need to learn from last nights game.
Whit Merrifield said they need to put last night behind them.
The Royals fall to 12-19 for the season. They are off Thursday and begin a 3 game series in Chicago against the White Sox on Friday. That begins a stretch of 17 straight games without a day off.
