USD 386 Madison Virgil Superintendent Stu Moeckel recently summed up the start of the school year in one word, “amazing.”
Moeckel offered an update on KVOE’s Morning Show Wednesday and says staff and students both have adjusted well to the COVID-19 impacted school year. USD 386 followed suit with many other area districts in offering online and in-person class options with Moeckel reporting that roughly 95 percent of students opted to attend in-person.
In terms of mitigation strategies, the district installed sanitation stations throughout school buildings, teachers have been constantly reminding students of proper hygiene techniques and mask usage is a must throughout the district. Moeckel praised their students for following the mandate stating there has been no issue with compliance so far.
Moeckel added that the additional equipment installed for COVID mitigation has had no impact on the budget thanks to SPARK allocations from the Greenwood County Commission.
The district’s extracurricular activities schedule is still on as planned at this time according to Moeckel. He says activities such as athletics provide an important boost for both their students and the community.
KVOE will continue checking in with area school districts for updates on operations throughout the school year.
