COVID-19 has caused the cancellation of many community events this year, but some have found ways to adjust to local guidelines and continue on.
Both the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Make a Joyful Noise 5k are going virtual this year. Although they are taking slightly different approaches to going virtual, the hope is this will allow participants access to what would otherwise be canceled events.
Juliette Bradley, the Kansas Director of Communications for the Alzheimer’s Association, spoke with KVOE about the Alzheimers Walk app which will allow their walk to become a virtual walk.
The walk is Oct. 4. Organizers have set up a special app that will track steps, deposit donation checks and send social media messages. The Promise Garden will be Oct. 4 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds, but it will be a view-only event. There is also an online pep rally Sept. 30. The minimum fundraising amount is $100.
Make A Joyful Noise is Sept. 19. Organizer Melissa Herring spoke with KVOE about their approach to making the walk virtual.
Organizers also recorded about 2.5 hours of praise music for participants to listen to as they run or walk. People can go online to www.active.com to register, or they can also go to the Make a Joyful Noise Facebook page or the Lee Beran Recreation Center for a paper form. Cost is $25. Proceeds benefit the New Life Christian Church worship team and Blessing Boxes ministries.
