Funeral arrangements have been announced for a former ESU administrator who passed away this past weekend.
A private graveside service is coming for Harry Stephens, the former Emporia State dean of students, vice-president of student affairs and Foundation trustee who died Saturday at the age of 78. Stephens was an employee and administrator at ESU for nearly 40 years after he graduated from the university and continued to serve as a member of the ESU Foundation Board of Trustees after his official retirement in 2004.
Stephens also was appointed to the Kansas Senate 17th District seat in 1999.
Stephens was active in the community, including time involved in the Emporia Human Relations Commission, Humane Society of the Flint Hills, Granada Theatre Alliance, Kansas Children’s Service League, Hetlinger Developmental Services and Friends of the Flint Hills Community Health Center.
Stephens is survived by his wife, Sharon, two children, two brothers and two grandchildren.
The private service will be held at Memorial Lawn Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia. The date has not been announced.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Harry L. & Sharon Sue Stephens Educational Fund, the Kansas Children’s Service League or Hetlinger Developmental Services — all in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box 175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
