It was a rough first game for the Emporia High football team. The Spartans were defeated by the number 3 ranked team in 3A Topeka Hayden 47-7 Friday night.
Hayden started early with a interception return for a touchdown by Desmond Purnell. Purnell had a big night he also scored on touchdown runs of 26 and 53 yards and a pass reception of 51 yards.
Will Devader added touchdown runs of 6,1 and 40 yards for Hayden.
Emporia High scored on a Robert Trujillo 1 yard run in the closing seconds of the game.
Camden Kirmer was one of the bright spots 122 yards rushing and a pass reception.
Emporia High Coach Corby Milleson said there was some improvement in the 2nd half.
Coach Milleson said there were some bright spots.
The Spartans will try to bounce back next Friday when they play at Atchison.
Emporia High added Atchison and Kapaun Mt. Carmel, on September 17th, to their schedule after Topeka West and Topeka High had their seasons suspended for 2 more weeks by the Topeka 501 school board.
