Like just about every organization these days, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is adjusting to the new coronavirus-based landscape.
Chief of Interpretation Heather Brown says most of its planned activities had to be canceled, but the preserve is still a popular place as people use the trails, watch the bison herd and stargaze.
As those activities continue, the preserve is continuing renovations to several buildings, including the historic house.
The house remains closed until those renovations are complete. Other buildings remain open. Access to the visitor center is limited at 10 people.
Brown says visitation last year was around 33,000 people, and this year’s numbers are on track to match those from 2019 even with the preserve closed at the early part of the pandemic and the possibility most public events may have to be canceled through the end of the year.
More information about the preserve is available online at www.nps.gov/tapr or on the preserve’s Facebook page.
