Emporia High School’s Be The Change Club is looking to embrace change as it continues its message of empowerment for local youth.
For the past 11 years Be The Change has met every Wednesday of the school year inside room 220 at the high school under the leadership and direction of Reverend Larry Williams. Over the past decade, hundreds of Emporia High students have attended the weekly meetings to receive a message of encouragement and empowerment from both Williams and former alumni.
Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic still in full swing, in-person meetings are not as easy to accommodate at the high school. As the school year approached, Williams says he met with Emporia High Principal Dathan Fischer to discuss what possibilities were available to continue the long-standing program.
Williams says that regardless of the course of action they choose, it will be a drastic change for the program. However, Williams says if he has learned anything over the last decade, it is to embrace and make the best out of unexpected changes.
Williams closed out his interview with KVOE last week by uttering what has become his trademark phrase “we are all destined for greatness.” KVOE will be checking in with Be The Change to update its progress as the school year unfolds.
