USD 253 Emporia is announcing six cases of coronavirus across the district. It is also starting remote-only education at Walnut Elementary because of a cluster at the school, although the decision only affects a few classrooms.
On its tracking dashboard Friday, the district said at least two people as connected by time and location have been confirmed with the virus. Kindergarten students currently going to Walnut for education, as well as a third-grade class, will shift to remote learning next week. Parents of other students are told to monitor their children’s health and be vigilant in wearing masks, social distancing and practicing good hygiene.
USD 253 is not specifying the number of confirmed cases and quarantined patients by building, but it says there are three elementary staffers and a student with the virus. A middle or high school staffer and a support staffer have also contracted coronavirus. Ten staffers, including eight elementary workers, and five elementary students have been told to quarantine.
USD 253 rolled out the dashboard after Wednesday night’s Board of Education meeting. The district announced five staffers had the virus between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. It also announced one case between Aug. 25-28; five cases between Aug. 10-24; and two cases between July 1-Aug. 10. All cases from July 1-Aug. 31 were in district staff.
