The Census effort won’t be ending next week after all.
A federal judge in California has ruled the national count has to continue until Halloween, not next Wednesday as had been announced. This follows a prior extension to Oct. 31 earlier this spring, only to be followed by a revised schedule last month by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
The injunction from District Judge Lucy Koh followed a lawsuit from the National Urban League, the city of Los Angeles and other entities from using the Sept. 30 deadline.
The Justice Department may appeal.
Right now, the Census Bureau lists Kansas with a 99.1 percent enumerated response rate, with a self-response rate at 69.3 percent. Lyon County’s self-response rate is 66.5 percent, with Emporia at 65.3 percent. Self-response rates at the city and county level can be found below.
Local Kansas Counts representatives will join KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday with updates and a call to participate in the Census, regardless of the deadline.
