The fundraising fight against Alzheimer’s Disease made its annual stop in Emporia on Sunday with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Fundraising for the Emporia walk officially began Sunday with online activities as well as a Promise Garden at the north end of the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Instead of holding the full event at the Fairgrounds, participants were encouraged to walk wherever they felt comfortable or donate to a walk team.
There is a lot of attention paid to the ultimate goal — finding a cure — but organizer Stacy Schultz tells KVOE News the Alzheimer’s Association helps patients, family members and caregivers in other ways, including a 24-7 helpline.
Typically, the fundraising focus is the day of the event — in this case Sunday — and the first few days after the event. However, coronavirus prompted the Alzheimer’s Association to continue fundraising until the end of the year. Currently, about $10,000 of the $30,000 goal has been raised.
Schultz says there may well be a virtual component to the walk next year as well because the event reached more people with information about programs, services and education.
