A single-vehicle accident was the cause of a widespread power outage in east Emporia Sunday morning.
According to Emporia Police Officer Reagen McClellan, a pickup truck hauling a camper was traveling westbound on East Sixth Ave. and preparing to turn onto US Highway 50. Officer McClellan says early indications are the driver did not make a wide enough turn and struck a power pole at the intersection.
A power line then fell into the roadway blocking the eastbound lane of traffic on Highway 50. The resulting outage affected portions of East 10th, 9th and 7th avenue and further east down the highway.
Traffic was blocked in both directions from Whilden to Weaver as Evergy crews worked to restore power. Power was restored shortly before 12:45 pm.
Over 100 Evergy customers were affected by the outage. No injuries were reported.
