Emporia State University’s Teachers College and athletic department are teaming up with the College Football Playoff Foundation Go Teach program. Monday the Athletic department recognized the 53 Student athlete that are enrolled as education majors with specially branded Go Teach items.
Teachers College Dean Joan Brewer said athletes have the skills that make great teachers.
Athletic Director Kent Weiser athletes bring something special to the classroom and as coaches.
The Go Teach program is also encouraging student athletes to consider the teaching profession. There is a current and future teacher shortage in many different teaching fields across the country. Student-athletes offer a pool of individuals who reflect the desired characteristics and skills to be prime targets for the field of teaching. The current population of student-athletes also reflects the diversity that districts look for in the educator workforce. Emporia State is the first Division II school to become affiliated with the Go Teach Program.
