People needing livestock processed had best act fast, according to Allen Meat Processors owner Mike Uhl.
Like other small and medium-sized meat processors, Uhl has seen his facility packed to the rafters after coronavirus turned customers from larger facilities — which had to slow down their business or close outright for several days. Uhl says the backlog started in early March and now extends to December 2021.
Uhl recently finished his first full year owning the business and says business has been at least double the prior year. He has brought on extra staff and is planning to expand by adding a hanging cooler and more freezer space.
Uhl is concentrating on beef now simply because more people needing cattle processed stepped forward than those needing hogs — and he says cattle offer “a little more leeway” than hogs because of their life spans. Uhl also is not processing wild game this fall and winter just because there isn’t the room to do so.
